Better Newspaper Contest and Better Newspaper Advertising Contest
2009 Toast to the Winners, NNA's 123rd Annual Convention and Trade Show, Mobile, AL
Each year the National Newspaper Association honors the best in community journalism and advertising in the Better Newspaper Contest (BNC) and Better Newspaper Advertising Contest (BNAC). Entries are accepted during the contest entry period, which occurs annually from Jan. 1 through March 31. All entries must be postmarked by March 31 of the current contest year. Participation is limited to NNA member newspapers in good standing at the time of the Awards Ceremony, which is held at NNA’s Annual Convention.
“NNA’s Better Newspaper and Better Newspaper Advertising contests provide the nation’s community newspapers a way to compete with the best in the business as they continually strive to improve,” said Reed Anfinson, publisher of the Swift County News-Monitor in Benson, MN. “That competition leads newspapers to find new ways to entice readers to subscribe and convince businesses that their publications are still the best investment of their advertising dollars. Judging the contest is always difficult due to the high quality of so many of the entries. Each year I wait for my turn to judge the contest knowing how much I will learn in the process,” he said.
A contest fee of $20 must be included for each entry in each category. Entries from NNA member newspapers must be published between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of the year prior to the contest year to be eligible, with the exception of website categories, which are judged in place. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be submitted to the contest or in any one category.
