Overview
The National Newspaper Association offers its members several important resources to assist members in publishing quality community newspapers. These resources are made possible by member support — financial support through membership, and the sharing of expertise and successes among and between members.
- Great Ideas Database
- NNA’s best and brightest publishers have made the Great Ideas session of the Annual Convention a huge hit for more than a decade. These terrific success stories, along with other great ideas we find throughout the year, are available to NNA members 24/7. And, members are encouraged to submit and share their great ideas at any time to grow this valuable resource.
- Publishers’ Auxiliary
- “Pub Aux” is the only national publication serving America's community newspapers. First published in 1865, Publishers' Auxiliary is also the oldest newspaper serving the newspaper industry. It is a must-read for those in the community newspaper business. It provides valuable and up-to-date best practices, profiles, information and ideas on the management, operation and production of community newspapers.
- Electronic Publishers’ Auxiliary
- Don't have time to search dozens of websites a day for news about or for community newspapers? Electronic PubAux is NNA's weekly roundup from across the Internet of news and resources of interest or concern to community newspaper publishers and managers.
- Annual Convention and Trade Show
- For more than 120 years, the National Newspaper Association has sponsored an annual convention and trade show. The convention is a terrific opportunity to network with peers, to see what's new in software, hardware and services available to our industry at the trade show and to attend informative seminars and roundtable discussions.
- Members Helping Members
- Who knows the challenges and opportunities facing community newspaper publishers better than another publisher? That's why NNA started its Members Helping Members Program. Another publisher may have the answer to one of your pressing challenges. And you just may have the answer to someone else's question. Skip re-inventing the wheel and move quickly to opportunities and solutions.
- House Ads
- Promote your community newspapers with these customizable house ads. NNA has produced a series of house ads based on our latest market research. House ads from other sources are also presented.
- Industry Research

- The National Newspaper Association monitors, evaluates and analyzes trends affecting the community newspaper industry through annual research conducted in partnership with the Center for Advanced Social Research of the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism. NNA often creates house ads, promotions and presentation materials from its research for members to use in their communities. Highlights of NNA’s research can be found on the About Community Newspapers page of this website.
- The National Newspaper Association Foundation (NNAF), in partnership with the Huck Boyd National Center for Community Media, sponsors a juried competition for the best academic research from across the nation about community newspapers.
- NNA also participated in the founding of the Community Journalism Interest Group (COMJIG), a group of college and university teachers dedicated to the advancement of journalists working in small newsrooms. COMJIG is an interest group of the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication (AEJMC).
- American Profile has created a series of ads promoting community newspapers based on NNA's 2007 market research. These ads are available for NNA members to download* and use to promote their own community newspapers.
- Tools, Help and Training on the Internet
- The Internet has a vast number of free resources that can be of use to community newspaper publishers, editors, advertising staff, photographers — everyone involved in producing quality community newspapers. NNA staff has found and organized these links and resources for member use, 24/7, so members don’t have to spend hours or days scouring the web for these resources.

- Health news from Missouri Arthritis Rehabilitation Research and Training Center. MARRTC's "Stories for Reprint" are free to journalists and with a click of a button, members can expand their coverage of health issues.

- NNA's Job Exchange is your one-stop shop for all your employment needs--post help wanted ads, view openings at newspapers across the country or post your resume if you're in the job market. Manage your employment needs on your own time--24/7 and your ads are posted immediately.
- Media Kit Template
- Research commissioned by the National Newspaper Association shows that, unlike some larger market newspapers, the future of community newspapers is strong. To assist member newspapers get this information out to prospective advertisers, NNA has created components for a media kit that members can download and customize for their markets.
- Pay It Forward Promotion
- Our driving belief in the necessity of community newspapers is the inspiration behind the National Newspaper Association’s Pay It Forward campaign. With sponsors putting up cash prizes, the newspaper asks its readers to write in about how they would use their winnings to Pay It Forward in their communities. The newspaper highlights the stories and a winner is chosen in the various contests.
